No wonder our economy is suffering! Yesterday, I began a quest to look for gym shoes. I am a gym rat and go to the gym daily. I don’t like shopping for gym clothes or shoes but after 4 years, there is no tread left on my Reebok’s.
You’d think it would be a no brainer.
Not. Gym shoes are expensive, so I thought the best place to look would be on line. I saw scores of shoes I liked. However, before I took the plunge and placed my order, I wanted to shop size. One of the stores I shopped was Famous Footwear 2014 Latest New Balance 420. I explained to the clerk that I wanted a crosstraining shoe. She navigated to the side of the store where I could find one in every color. I asked about quality and the "best" shoe for the money at that point we began discussing where they are produced.
After researching Wikipedia, I was surprised to learn that everything was made in Asia. Nike, in Vietnam, Asics, Reebok, the list went on and on. I believe this country needs to mandate that all goods and services can only be produced in the United States. Initially, this may prove disastrous for small businesses, but eventually, it will help put Americans back to work.

Christmas seems to have arrived early this year on Wall Street. For when exploring reasons why stocks have been melting higher almost daily since early August, it is beginning to look a lot like stimulus. After all, it certainly has not been fundamentals driving the rally, as the global growth outlook continues to deteriorate and the risks remain as widespread as ever. Federal Reserve (the Fed) and the European Central Bank (ECB) stand ready to inject a fresh round of balance sheet expanding monetary stimulus into the system. And when Bernanke and Draghi open their sacks bearing monetary gifts, the upside potential for the stock market is seemingly boundless. But with stocks glistening once again, a glaring risk still remains it does not look like stimulus most anywhere else you go.

Stocks have enjoyed a resounding August thus far. The month began with much fanfare, as all eyes were on Chairman Mario Draghi at the latest ECB monetary policy meeting on August 2. For only a week earlier, Mr. Draghi had promised to do "whatever it takes" to save the euro currency. Such extremely strong words sparked investor expectations that game changing policy actions would be announced on August 2. But despite the fact that Draghi ended up delivering nothing other than more promises and no immediate action, stocks exploded to the upside anyway. In the eleven trading days since the ECB meeting, stocks as measured by the S 500 Index (SPY) have melted higher almost without interruption. In the process, they have broken out above the upward sloping trading channel that has been in place since the beginning of June.
It seems that Draghi may have pulled off the ECB’s own version of Jackson Hole a few weeks ago. Although no new balance sheet expanding monetary stimulus was actually announced, the mere promise that it would likely be coming soon appears to have been enough to whip the stock market into a fresh stimulus delight. It seems the anticipation may be just as good if not better than the reality.
A closer look at the daily trading activity of the stock market since the latest ECB is characteristic of typical stimulus euphoria. Over the last eleven trading days, it has proven simply impossible for stocks to go down in any sustainable way. On six consecutive days over the last two weeks cheap New Balance 150 White Brown Shoe, the stock market made an attempt at correcting solidly lower. In four instances, the market ended the day higher. And although it ended down in the remaining two trading days, the losses were minimal and the market closed well off of its lows.
Where have we seen such relentlessly positive market behavior before? The last two times either the Fed or the ECB engaged in balance sheet expanding monetary stimulus.
Back in December 2011, the ECB initiated its LongTerm Refinancing Operation, which sent stocks soaring for the duration of the program through the end of February 2012.
And in the original Jackson Hole speech back in late August 2010, the mere promise that what turned out to be QE2 would soon be on its way ignited a virtually uninterrupted stock rally into 2012.
So given the recent market reaction, it seems that the latest bundle of policy gifts from the Fed and the ECB are already loaded up on the sleigh and ready for delivery. And with this in mind, perhaps now is the time to shift portfolios heavily into stocks. Not so fast.
Perhaps not unlike a child that comes to expect an abundance of gifts under the tree based on past Christmas bounties, the stock market that has become accustomed to past policy largesse may be setting itself up for potential disappointment this time around.
Most significantly, some key confirmation signals of more balance sheet expanding monetary stimulus remain notably absent 2014 Latest New Balance 360. Leading among these are the performance of gold (GLD), silver (SLV) and copper (JJC). In regards to gold, it has demonstrated itself to perform on par with stocks during such monetary stimulus programs. As for silver, it has outperformed over these periods by as much as two to four times the return generated by stocks. And copper consistently posted returns that were as much as double the returns of stocks during past stimulus phases. Thus, it would be reasonable to expect gold, silver and copper to all be rallying strongly along with stocks in anticipation of another round of stimulus. But such is not the case today.
To highlight this point, it is worthwhile to compare on the late August 2010 episode when the market last boldly anticipated monetary policy action versus today’s similar front running.
The following are the charts for gold, silver and copper following Bernanke’s Jackson Hole speech over the same time period shown for stocks above. The prices for each also explode higher.
Each of these categories is communicating a decidedly different story today. While gold has edged higher since the recent ECB meeting, the advance has been modest at best. As for the stellar stimulus performer in silver, it has hardly even budged to this point. And the same could be said for copper, which is still trading below the levels right before Draghi spoke on August 2.
These conflicting signals imply one of two potential outcomes.
Under the first outcome, stocks have it right on the prospects for more balance sheet expanding monetary stimulus in the coming months, while gold, silver and copper all have it wrong. If this is the case, it implies now is the time to get long all of these categories with a tilt toward the metals that have been thus far blind to the stimulus that may soon be on its way.
Under the second outcome, stocks have it wrong by vastly overestimating the monetary stimulus if any that is delivered by central banks in the coming months, while gold, silver and copper all have it right. In this instance, it would once again suggest emphasizing the metals over stocks given the fact that the latter may ultimately endure a sharp correction once the realization sets in that the stimulus stocks were so anticipating will not be arriving any time soon.
In reality, the final outcome is likely to fall somewhere in between. In regards to the Fed, as long as economic data remains mixed and the stock market continues to float higher, they are likely to remain on the sidelines with no further stimulus through the remainder of the year. After all, if you can keep fooling the stock market higher with words, then you have no need to actually take any action. As for the ECB, they are far more likely to introduce some sort of balance sheet expanding stimulus program in the coming months. While the ECB also dumbfoundingly seems endlessly able to fool the market with words, Europe has major problems that actually require immediate attention through policy action. But just as Europe has done throughout the financial crisis, it would not be surprising if the final product from the ECB ends up not only confusing the market but also falling woefully short in terms of magnitude and duration of what investors may have been expecting.
Given the uncertainty associated with what action monetary policy makers ultimately decide to take in the end, it remains worthwhile to maintain a hedged approach. An allocation to stocks has merit given the potential that fullscale balance sheet expanding monetary policy may yet be implemented in the coming months. But such allocations should be held in proportion with other asset classes in an overall portfolio strategy. Moreover, a focus on higher quality and lower volatility stocks that have yet to participate in the August rally has merit from a risk control perspective. Representative positions include the S 500 Low Volatility ETF (SPLV), McDonald’s (MCD), Nike (NKE) and Occidental Petroleum (OXY). High Yield Bonds (HYG) may also have merit under this scenario.
Instead, a particular emphasis on those categories that have yet to participate in any stimulus driven advance provides even greater upside opportunity than stocks at present. This includes gold and silver via the Central Gold Trust (GTU) and Central Fund of Canada (CEF). In terms of application, the positioning in these two funds can be blended to achieve the desired percentage allocation to both metals. As for copper, FreeportMcMoRan (FCX) continues to provide an investment opportunity with a high correlation to copper prices.
Lastly, it is important to note that underlying global economic fundamentals remain poor and the outlook fraught with challenges. Thus, the stock market has little to support it at current levels if expectations for further monetary stimulus prove unfounded. As a result, maintaining allocations to more defensive asset classes that can move higher regardless of monetary policy action remains worthwhile. TIPS (TIP), Build America Bonds (BAB) and National Municipal Bonds (MUB). Treasuries (TLT) continue to provide a favorable negatively correlated hedge against the stock market. This is evidenced by the fact that as the SPY approaches overbought levels, the TLT recently entered oversold territory.
Regardless of whether Bernanke and Draghi decide to pile even more monetary stimulus under the market tree or end up leaving it bare, the opportunity continues to exist to both protect and capitalize on either outcome. Such prudence is the best gift of all for a portfolio in the current environment.

Given the uncertainty associated with what action monetary policy makers ultimately decide to take in the end, it remains worthwhile to maintain a hedged approach. An allocation to stocks has merit given the potential that fullscale balance sheet expanding monetary policy may yet be implemented in the coming months. But such allocations should be held in proportion with other asset classes in an overall portfolio strategy. Moreover, a focus on higher quality and lower volatility stocks that have yet to participate in the August rally has merit from a risk control perspective. Representative positions include the S 500 Low Volatility ETF (SPLV), McDonald’s (MCD), Nike (NKE) and Occidental Petroleum (OXY). High Yield Bonds (HYG) may also have merit under this scenario.
Instead, a particular emphasis on those categories that have yet to participate in any stimulus driven advance provides even greater upside opportunity than stocks at present. This includes gold and silver via the Central Gold Trust (GTU) and Central Fund of Canada (CEF). In terms of application, the positioning in these two funds can be blended to achieve the desired percentage allocation to both metals. I used to purchase Jeep parts from a company in east Ohio. Single building operation, and they had 34 UPS semi trailers continuously spotted at their dock. They weren’t paying full price either. Volume based pricing. No doubt Amazon isn’t taking a loss on my Prime ’free shipping’ (there is an annual fee for being a Prime member). Why drive 16 miles round trip in city traffic when Amazon can bring it to my door the next day?"Exactly. In many cases 16 miles is just a ’short hop’. There is still a lot of rural America out there. And even though I choose to live in a suburb of a large metro area, I do most of my shopping online. Amazon, eBay, and from smaller eTailers. I’d rather spend an hour looking on the internet, than an hour driving from store to store. Unfortunately, I don’t buy clothes online. The Chinese haven’t totally figured out the US sizing system. So I believe there will always be large clothiers in existence. However, I do buy my Rockport and New Balance shoes online, as no store seems to carry them in either the model or size I need. Shirts and slacks: Kohl’s or Target. Sears? Dead man walking.

Get ready for summer with help from a pedometer
Bathing suit season is paddling slowly toward us.
Now, there’s no need to panic. You don’t need to start training for a triathlon. But many people could stand to get just a wee bit more exercise, myself included.
My latest obsession is the pedometer. I recently picked up the New Balance VIA Active Pedometer, which is about $36.50 from Amazon. Although there are iPhone pedometer apps for considerably less money that offer more features, I wanted something smaller I could clip to or slip inside my pocket. And a standalone device means I won’t have to worry about my iPhone’s short battery life.
The device displays total steps (users can adjust their pace), average speed, and calories burned and works on either a 12 or 24hour format. The screen also displays the time, day, and date.
I also chose the VIA Active because it has an integrated USB connector. Unfortunately, the device is only compatible with PCs. And the software, which is available for download through the company website, is rather archaic compared to that offered by the iPhone app Discount New Balance 420 Grey White Sneakers.
The pedometer is quite reliable and is so small that one almost forgets it’s there (except when you check several times a day to see if you’ve reached your 10k step quota). Granted, the software leaves something to be desired. But maybe that’s just as well. The simple, unassuming push up is a fitness king. If you only have one "go to" upper body and core exercise in your bag, this one will provide benefits for years to come. But even this perfect exercise can become tedious and routine. So if you want to liven up your push ups, here are a few of the many varieties you can mix into your push up rotation.

This variation has you perform a push up while holding the handles of two dumbbells. At the top of each push up, stabilize your core, and add a lat row. Although the Bowie State University men’s and women’s indoor track teams did not come away with any first place finishes at the Penn State National Invitational last weekend, they did have some strong performances as they prepare for the New Balance Invitational in New York City Friday and Saturday.
On the men’s side, Bulldog junior William Bailey finished third in the long jump with a distance of 7.22 meters at the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor track in University Park 2014 New Balance 360 Black Navy Blue White, Pa. Bailey’s teammate, sophomore Jonathan Harper, was seventh in the high jump at 2.05 meters and 14th in the triple jump at 14.07 meters. Brelyn Finley, a sophomore, did well in the shot put as her throw of 13.55 meters put her in eighth place.
In other men’s results from the meet, Bryan Williams was 17th in the triple jump (13.66 meters) and Dana Smothers (Harford Technical) was 28th in the 200meter dash with a time of 23 Discount New Balance 150 Grey Sneakers.13 seconds. Analyst Downgrade Provides Opportunity in Foot Locker FL
There is something about the shoe business that seems to intrigue value players. The steadiness of the cash flow 2014 New Balance 150 on sale, perhaps the relatively low fashion risk compared to the apparel business, maybe just the understandability and the tangible nature of the business gives it appeal.
I have always preferred companies such as NIKE (NKE) or Reebok (mistakenly) or KSwiss (KSWS.) Wolverine Worldwide (WWW) has also been an interesting stock at times and if I was particularly venturesome, Genesco (GCO.)
Shoe retailers have been less interesting to me, but I am developing some interest in this area. The consolidation of the athletic footwear retailers has been quite thorough, and essentially the only players left at this point are Foot Locker (FL) and Finish Line (FINL cheap New Balance 150 White Brown Shoe.)
Foot Locker was downgraded by one of the analysts this morning, and this has prompted my interest. The downgrade was based on four observations/conclusions:
Margins have peakedlowhanging fruit has been pluckedturnaround is over.
Competition is increasing from sporting goods retailers as well as vendors’ owned retail networks.
The European market has become more competitive for what had been a high margin part of FL’s biz.
Foot Locker’s offering is not significantly differentiated from competitor offerings and relies heavily on product from Nike.
I suspect that there is some truth to the competitive landscape margin pressure issue, but as the analyst surmises, there may still be another 100 additional basis points left in operating margins due to some recycling of unfavorable leases and improved utilization. The rapid growth of brandowned stores has been a trend for some time and is hardly new. Nike has 240 stores compared to Foot Lockers’ 4000. I recognize that Reebok, New Balance, and Adidas also have a presence, but it is clear that FL is quite dominant.
The buyback is effective with some $35 million purchased in 2005.
ROIC has been very steady at around 1011%
The dividend was cranked up by 20% in November and still represents a low payout ratio.
The stock is down about 25% from its highs reached a year ago. EV/EBIT is only about 9 times. Long term debt is less than 10% of assets. The company has only recently instituted its share buyback program, certainly a step in the right direction. The consensus growth estimate of 13.4% seems high, but even with an 8 or 9% growth assumption and some erosion of operating margins, I still come up with values in the high $30’s and low $40’s versus the current $2223.

in Gahanna. This is the first time it was held and runners had mixed emotions about the event overall. One of the best things for the runners were the New Balance jackets that were given to the first 500 registrants. These were high quality stylish jackets that were worth more than the entry fee.
The morning of the race was a little confusing for runners as to the location of the portable restrooms before the start of the race. There were many who could not find them and the result was a long line in at a nearby Kroger’s. Unfortunately, some race participants didn’t make it to the start on time.
The race started out downhill for the first two miles settling into nearby neighborhoods. Then the course went into a trail. Once on the trail there was a very large hill to climb. It was also very hard on the other side of the hill as the incline forced runners to lean back and try to control their speed. There were also some parts where runners were very close to oncoming traffic.
Water stations were also a concern on the course. By looking at the course map, it was unclear as to where those stations were located and there was talk among the runners along the way wondering how much farther it would be to the next station Cheap New Balance WL574WBP on Sale. There was also a gel station around mile seven.
One extremely helpful aspect was that each mile marker was clearly visible along the course. Even mile marker 8 that had fallen down was still noticeable.

Overall, the Runcbus 10Miler was a good event with a few things that could be improved upon for next year. The jackets and post race food were a plus. in Gahanna. This is the first time it was held and runners had mixed emotions about the event overall. One of the best things for the runners were the New Balance jackets that were given to the first 500 registrants. These were high quality stylish jackets that were worth more than the entry fee.
The morning of the race was a little confusing for runners as to the location of the portable restrooms before the start of the race. There were many who could not find them and the result was a long line in at a nearby Kroger’s. Unfortunately, some race participants didn’t make it to the start on time.
The race started out downhill for the first two miles settling into nearby neighborhoods. Then the course went into a trail. Once on the trail there was a very large hill to climb. It was also very hard on the other side of the hill as the incline forced runners to lean back and try to control their speed. There were also some parts where runners were very close to oncoming traffic.
Water stations were also a concern on the course. By looking at the course map, it was unclear as to where those stations were located and there was talk among the runners along the way wondering how much farther it would be to the next station Cheap New Balance WL574WBP on Sale. There was also a gel station around mile seven.
One extremely helpful aspect was that each mile marker was clearly visible along the course. Even mile marker 8 that had fallen down was still noticeable.
The race ended somewhat uphill, but nothing like the hills along the course. Subway subs and chips were offered as the post race food, which was a nice change from other races.
Overall, the Runcbus 10Miler was a good event with a few things that could be improved upon for next year. The jackets and post race food were a plus. The hilly course and not knowing where the restrooms and water stations was something of a topic of discussion for runners. A Guide to Men’s Shoe Shopping for Wide Feet
If anyone knows the woes of shopping for big, wide feet, it’s me. But I have had plenty of success over the years, through much trial and error, and I hope that this guide can help with your search.
Before jumping into the guide, let’s make sure we understand the terminology around wide shoe shopping. Foot width, as pertains to shoes, is measured in D and E, D representing medium width, and E through EEEEEE (6E) representing the range of wider fits. Not all shoe brands or models offer varying widths, so it’s important to know ahead of time what your options are Cheap New Balance WL574WBP on Sale. The Puma, Adidas, and especially Jordan brands are narrowrunning brands. I think the particular pair I had were an indulgent 5E size 12, and I proudly introduced their nickname of "Footboats." Since it felt like walking on water, the name felt particularly applicable.
As a young American male, I regularly find myself sacrificing fit for the brand equity of Nike. If you’re comfortable taking that same route now and again, be prepared to buy from 1.5 to up to 3 sizes too long.
Reebok has its moments, and may typically run wider than Nike, but often I’ve found Reebok has no concept of the actual shape of a foot, which is especially problematic when you’re looking for a flexible, practically custom shape as is the case with wide, flat feet. Nevertheless, I have found Reebok to be a great wide brand for cleats for the soccer, football, or baseball players out there. Converse has a tendency to be a very threadbare, basic, classic shoe, and this favors the widefooted. In case by now you haven’t noticed the trend, style and innovation (cough Nike!) are often especially unforgiving. That said, most Converse run slightly wide as a brand, and you can usually get away with wearing your correct size or one size up.
Vans when appropriately selected, are God’s gift to the wide and flatfooted. They tend to feel more like plush chinchilla bath towels wrapped loosely around your toes than they do shoes, and you can definitely wear your correct size or a +0.5the only catch is they’re not always occasion or sportappropriate. New Balance, however, is the Wide Athletic Shoe Brand. It’s actually podiatristrecommended, and my personal experience with them has been phenomenal. With a "wide" variety of EEEEEE models, they’re a great basketball, walking, or crosstraining shoe, and I was especially excited to find they actually made the only wide model of track shoe I’ve been able to find. You may have to sacrifice on the style side a bit, but I’ve definitely noticed in the last two years that NB is pushing their designs and really making up some ground. Apart from Nike, there’s no other brand I’ve worn more in the last six years, and from a fit, function, and value perspective, New Balance is the pick for the wide, flat, or bunioned foot.

Having recently decided to roll the dice and embrace the boat shoe trend I’ve been seeing, I was extremely relieved to see that a good number of Sperry, Timberland, and Rockport models come up to 2E in width. I went with a pair of Sperry’s, size 12 3E, and love them.
EXTREMELY IMPORTANT WHERE TO PURCHASE: My broadfooted brethren out there no firsthand how infuriating and depressing it can be trying to order shoes online, without the benefit of trying on first. They allow you to filter by width (and about two dozen other criteria if so desired), have thorough and accurate reviews (even product demos), and offer free shipping with a generous return policy. I went ten years without ordering shoes online before I tried Zappos twice just in the last three months and could not be more satisfied.

Merrell Men’s Cruise Control Shoe is another great shoe for trail runners. This shoe is designed for runners who don’t know the meaning of over doing it and also designed to prevent over pronation. The Cruise Control shoe is ultra lightweight and provides a great ventilation and drainage system.
Nike has always been a trusted name brand shoe for me, and their Shox are about the only brand of shoe I will buy Womens New Balance H710. So the Nike Shox Trail Runner would be one of my favorite trail running shoes. They offer great stability and support, and are all around comfortable.
